Vivekananda Institute of Languages (VIL)

"We want that education by which character is formed,
strength of mind is increased, the intellect is expanded,
and by which one can stand on one’s own feet."
- Swami Vivekananda

TVivekananda Institute of Languages (VIL) is a wing of ‘Vivekananda Institute of Value Education & Culture (VIVEC)’ of Sri Ramakrishna Ashrama, Rajkot.

The Institute was inaugurated by Revered Swami Vagishanandaji Maharaj, President, Ramakrishna Math, Mumbai , Senior Trustee and Member of Governing Body of Ramakrishna Math & Ramakrishna Mission on 9th June, 2007, Saturday.

The first session of the Institute started from July, 2007.

Why languages?
Swami Vivekananda said: ‘Expansion is life, contraction is death’. The modern age is the age of globalisation, when the world has turned into a ‘global village’. No one can afford to stay isolated in this modern world. To live, one HAS TO EXPAND.

Languages are the sure means to expand as they bring people together breaking social, cultural and national barriers. Languages help one to understand one’s own cultural traditions and also make one aware about the diverse cultures of various nations. It also opens vast avenues of opportunities for anyone who is willing to travel extensively for purposes of study, jobs and business. It makes one feel ‘one with the world’.

Prayer:
Swami Vivekananda said, ‘The very essence of education is concentration of mind, not the collecting of facts.’ So, everyday the classes of both the morning and afternoon schedules start with a prayer by chanting the Vedic Shanti mantras. The prayer is followed by a holy reading, or sharing some thoughts or incidents from the life of Sri Ramakrishna, Sarada Devi and Swami Vivekananda and other great personalities.

ENGLISH - The Burning Need
Students are often found to lack in communication skills in English. We became especially aware of this fact when we came in close contacts with the teachers, parents and students during our educational activities.

In spite of having the best of the required talents, unfortunately, these students often fail to compete successfully where other students with English communication skills excel over them. We found the students to fall back in their career opportunities only due to this communication drawback. This also gives rise to inferiority complexes in the students.

There also lies a deep interest and urgent need among the general public to learn English. After the post-globalisation phase of India, there has been a very quick and prominent development in Gujarat, especially in the industrial sector. Companies have to meet and deal with people of other states and countries. The knowledge of communication skills in English helps them tremendously to be successful in their business and jobs.

Gujarat has a very big number of non-residential Indians who mostly live in countries like England and America, where the main spoken language is English. More and more people are now-a-days planning to move and settle abroad to make their fortune. They too need a good command over the communication skills of English.

Now-a-days, parents are more willing to admit their children into English medium schools and colleges as it would make them more competent for further studies and jobs. Knowledge of Basic English becomes a must for these parents, especially the mothers of small children to guide them in their school homework and studies.

In order to help these people to come from different sections of the society with a common need, and to help them to ‘stand on their own feet’, as envisaged by Swami Vivekananda, the Ashrama runs language learning courses in English, especially in ‘Spoken English’

At present the Institute runs three kinds of courses in English :-
  1. Basic English Language Learning Course:- The Basic English course encourages the students to learn to speak and write simple English correctly and confidently.
  2. Advanced English Language Learning Course:- The Advanced English course introduces the student to the basic grammar of English. It also enriches the student’s skills in English communication.
  3. English Language Learning Course for School Students:- The English course for school students encourages the young students to develop the basic skills of learning English- reading, writing & speaking. It also helps the students to perform better in their school studies
Salient Features of the VIL English Course:
  1. The course is meant for them who have introduction to Basic English but are unable to speak confidently in it due to the lack of environment and practice.
  2. 2. Importance is given to learn English through various communicative methods avoiding the intricacies of grammar.
  3. 3. Special emphasis is given to active participation of the students in the class.
  4. 4. Care is taken to encourage the students to speak simple but correct English.
  5. 5. Regular worksheets are given to the students to think on the lessons taught in the classes and answer the questions themselves in their homes.
  6. 6. Interactive seminars are arranged after every 10 classes to monitor the true improvement of the students.
  7. 7. Each day the class starts with a prayer by chanting the Vedic Mantras. Great and inspiring ideas of Swami Vivekananda and other great men of the world are shared with the students to encourage them to have character-building education.

SANSKRIT - the language of India’s glorious past:

The treasures of India’s great cultural heritage lie hidden in Sanskrit language. Unfortunately, the modern generation, especially the youth of India are unaware of their glorious cultural heritage.

Swami Vivekananda wanted India to be seated again in Her throne of glory. In order to fulfil Swamiji’s dream, India needs to go back to Her roots. The only way is to become aware of the great cultural heritage of India.

Therefore, courses have been designed where students will be introduced to the great cultural heritage of India and the eternal values of character-building and man-making through Sanskrit.

The Institute runs two kinds of courses on Sanskrit:-
  1. Sanskrit & Indology course:- The Sanskrit and Indology course introduces the students to the great heritage of India hidden in the Sanskrit language
  2. Simple Spoken Sanskrit for school students:- The Spoken Sanskrit course for School Students tries to instil love for Sanskrit in the mind of the young minds. It also helps them in their school studies
Salient Features of the VIL Sanskrit Course:-
  1. Basic grammar is taught to the students to enable them to speak simple Sanskrit.
  2. Simple interactive methods and used to make the teaching of Sanskrit interesting
  3. Emphasis is given to introduce the students to the great cultural heritage of India.
  4. The students are introduced to great Sanskrit literary works that form the basis of the India’s culture.
  5. Regular worksheets are given to the students for evaluating their progress.
  6. Cultural programmes are arranged for the school students to encourage them and also to spread the message of learning Sanskrit among other young students.

BENGALI LANGUAGE LEARNING COURSE:

The Institute also runs a Bengali language course. It was started keeping in mind the earnest and repeated requests of the Ashrama devotees, who are very interested to read the original Bengali Ramakrishna-Vivekananda literature. However, a very positive response has also come from the general public to learn this language which is said to be ‘the second-most sweetest language in the world’.
