Service to Poor Street Children

Swami Vivekananda said, ‘Feel, my children, feel; feel for the poor, the ignorant, the downtrodden.’

Every Saturday, a group of about 35 children living in the streets and slums of Rajkot city are brought to the Ashrama in the Ashrama vehicle under the supervision of a devotee. The children first visit the Temple and meditate for a while. Then, they attend prayer sessions under the supervision of a monastic member. They are told stories about the dignity of labour, self-respect, honesty and other values that form one’s character. They are also taught about basic health and hygiene. They often play games in the Ashrama ground with great joy. At the end, they are given milk, fruits, biscuits and other food.

Often festivals like Janmashtami, Rakshabandhan, Navaratri etc. are celebrated with them by telling stories about the festival and singing bhajans. The devotees of the Ashrama make home-made delicacies for the children during the celebration of these festivals.

The expression of joy in the faces of the children shows the happiness that they feel in the Ashrama. Here, they are not looked down upon but are respected as any other human being and served with the attitude of Bal-Narayana (God in the form of the children).
