Kamarpukur
Temple of Sri Ramakrishna

At that time of his birth in 1836, there was a shade, meant for the husking machine and an oven for boiling paddy. Just on the spot of his birth, the altar of the present temple has been constructed.

To the east of the village Kamarpukur, lies Budhui-moral and Bhutir-khal is located just to the north-west of Sri Ramakrishna’s house. He used to meditate in these lonely and quite cremation grounds.

Gadadhar used to go there often in his boyhood. Pyne’s family used to observe ‘Shivaratri’ with fast, keep vigil and whole night worship of Shiva. Once in the course of Village drama, boy Gadadhar dressed in the garb of Lord Shiva plunged in to an ecstatic trance.

Manik Raja’s house at present condition

Manik Chandra Bandyopadhyaya of Bhursubo village was known as ‘Manik Raja’. Ramjay, his brother, was so charmed and expressed to Khudiram : ‘Friend, this son of yours is not an ordinary child. It seems to me that he possesses godly qualities in a marked degree.’ To the west of Bhutir-Khal Manik Raja planted an extensive mango grove for the public. This garden became the playground of Sri Ramakrishna and his friends in his boyhood. They would run away from school to this secluded place and engaged themselves in dramas.

Chinu Shankhari’s birth-place

Chinu or Srinivas was a maker of shell-bracelets. His relations with the boy Gadadhar were very sweet. With a strong faith that Gadadhar was a divine being he secretly worshipped him with flowers and sweets as the incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Later Sri Ramakrishna often referred to his deep-seated devotion and love.

Gopeswar Shiva Temple

This temple is situated to the east of Sri Ramakrishna’s house. Hearing about the madness of Gadadhar during his ecstatic moods at Dakshineswar, his mother, practiced hard penances to get divine grace for cure of her son. She heard a voice directing her to do likewise before the Shiva of Mukundapur.

Mukundapur Shiva Temple

It is situated to the south-west of Sri Ramakrishna’s birth place. On being directed by Gopeswar Shiva, Gadadhar’s mother went to this temple and lay there without food and drink where she heard a divine voice saying, ‘Don’t fear, you son is not mad; he has become like this because of divine intoxication.’ It is said that from that time onward many people have got their prayers fulfilled.

Haldarpukur

On the northern side of Yogi’s Shiva temple is a small lake called Haldarpukur. Many sweet memories of the boyhood days of Sri Ramakrishna center around this lake.

The Temple of Sri Raghuvira

It was previously a small hut facing the east. The present temple has been constructed exactly on the same spot with the same dimensions. Here Saligrama of Raghuvira, the earthen Jar representing Goddess Sitala, the Rameshwar Shiva-linga, an image of Gopala and Saligrama of Narayana are worshipped everyday.

House of Sri Ramakrishna

It is the ancestral western hut facing the south. At present it is used as a part of shrine of Sri Ramakrishna.

The mango tree

It stands to the east of the parlour of Sri Ramakrishna and still yields fruits. Sri Ramakrishna himself planted this tree.

The Parlour

Sri Ramakrishna used to meet people and instruct them.

Yogi’s Shiva Temple

It is situated to the north of the residence of Sri Ramakrishna. In front of this temple his mother Chandramani Devi had a divine vision in which she saw a celestial light coming from the image of Shiva, filled the temple and swiftly enter her body. When regained consciousness, she felt that she had conceived. As a result, Sri Ramakrishna was born.

The Primary School of Laha’s

The school was held in the spacious Natmandir in front of the Laha’s house. Gadadhar joined this school at the age of five. In short time he learnt to read and write. He had a dislike for arithmetic. Though he made no appreciable progress in his studies, his hand-writing was good.

Dhani Kamarini’s Birth place and temple

It is situated to the south-east of Sri Ramakrishna’s house. Dhani Kamarini, a blacksmith woman, served Gadadhar from his childhood. During his sacred thread ceremony, inspite of elders’ objections, as Dhani belongs to a lower caste, Gadadhar honoured her by accepting first alms and thus kept his promise. Recently, a small temple has been built up on this site, and an oil-painting of Dhani with the child Gadadhar in her lap has been placed there.
