Today's Thought

Balak Sangh

My child, what I want is muscles of iron and nerves of steel, inside which dwells a mind of the same material as that of which the thunderbolt is made.
- Swami Vivekananda

The Vivekananda Balak Sangha aims mainly to carry to the children of the society the life-giving and eternal values as taught and reflected in the life of Sri Ramakrishna, Ma Sarada Devi and Swami Vivekananda, who were the embodiments of the Great Values of India.

Swami Vivekananda wanted character-building education to be brought to every door of the country, especially to the remote rural areas that have been neglected for centuries. The present scenario of the society also depicts that it is the urgent need of the hour.

Sri Ramakrishna Ashrama, Rajkot started the Vivekananda Balak Sangha under its Rural Development Project keeping this Ideal in view.

The children are encouraged to imbibe thoughts that would enable them to develop their self–esteem, love their country, be respectful citizens and adore the great culture of India. The emphasis is laid to develop their overall personality.

The project is carried out through the private centers run by the devotees of Sri Ramakrishna Ashrama, Rajkot under the supervision and guidance of monks of the Ashrama. At present, the Balak Sangha runs in 3 places, namely Bhuj (Dist; Kutch), Adipur (Dist: Kutch), Upleta (Dist: Porbandar).

Each batch of the students of the Balak Sangha consists of about 50 students. The course is of 12 weeks. Boys and girls of the age group of 7 to 14 years are admitted in the courses. Classes are held in the premises of the private centers on Sundays from 10 to 12 noon. The children are taught Vedic Chanting, Devotional Songs, Yogasanas, Creative Games, Painting, Value- based stories and life and teachings of great personalities. The children are also taken for an industrial visit to make them familiar with the recent developments and usages of science and technology. A token admission fee of Rs.50/- only is taken from the students.

The dedicated local devotees and volunteers of the Ramakrishna Ashrama who are very well acquainted with the eternal values of the Sri Ramakrishna Bhavadhara (the ideology as taught by Sri Ramakrishna-Holy Mother-Swamiji) take the responsibility of conducting the programmes of the Balak Sangha.

Very positive and encouraging feedback has been received from the parents, schools and others. The children also eagerly look forward to the weekends to attend the classes of the Balak Sangha. Requests keep on pouring to enlarge the size and scope of the activities of the Balak Sangha.
